Pet Loss Therapy
The loss of a pet or animal can be a time of deeply felt sorrow. It is often described as losing a family member.
Many things can affect and heighten this sense of grief such as an unexpected death, the loss of a long-term companion, or circumstances that require a beloved pet be given up, such when a pet goes missing or there is a separation during a natural disaster.
Pet bereavement can be complicated by the guilt sometimes felt with a loss, for example when an accident has occurred, having to make a decision regarding euthanasia, or needing to give up a pet.
Perhaps the people you count on to care for you in times of need consider the heartache you feel over the loss of your pet or animal to be a less than legitimate form of mourning or something you should move on from quickly. This is known as disenfranchised grief. Unsupported, the sadness can be even harder to bear.
We can work through this immense sadness.
Pet loss therapy can help provide a supportive place to express, validate, and address the heavy emotions associated with the loss of a beloved pet or animal, such as difficulty coping, loneliness, anxiety, or depression.
Together, we will recognize your relationship and the intensity of your loss; honor the continued bond between you and your pet; and help you find personal growth in the experience. Let’s schedule a time to talk.
