Life Transitions

Changes in our lives can come in so many ways and at so many speeds.

  • adjusting to vocational school, college, or that first ‘real’ job
  • considering a career change
  • discovering or being ready to share new insights into who you are
  • aging
  • a change in living conditions
  • discovering a partner’s infidelity
  • family or household members arriving or leaving
  • questioning your sexuality or gender identity
  • a death
  • a change in physical health
  • a decrease in financial status
  • and the list goes on!

Sometimes a life transition is a change in how we see ourselves—or a desire to have other people change how they see and know us.

What do life transitions tend to have in common?

   —  a sense of vulnerability

   —  a reordering of our priorities, and

   —  the possibility for growth.

A life change may come along with difficult or bewildering choices or circumstances. Therapy can help you clarify your options. This ensures opportunities and challenges are discovered, weighed, and considered so you can move forward with more confidence.

If you’ve had a sudden, unexpected changes in your life, you may feel you’ve arrived in completely unfamiliar territory for which you aren’t prepared. Therapy can give you breathing space and a place to work through your thoughts, feelings, and choices in confidence.

Even positive life transitions that we seek out can surprise us with wide-ranging emotions, stress, and sometimes conflicts with the people that we consider to be ‘on our team’. Mastering that new job you pursued and got; moving to a new place; wedding planning; celebrating an outstanding personal achievement; or deciding whether or not to expand your family are all examples of this.

How else can therapy help with life transitions?

  • building on your existing strengths, perseverance, and resilience
  • adding to your coping skills
  • recognizing your self-worth
  • enhancing your confidence in yourself
  • and teaching you new ways to make choices and communicate
